When starting out with your online business you probably want to set it up as cheaply as possible, and this includes the setting up of your website too. WordPress is often the platform of choice for those just starting out online, without the budget to hire someone to create a website for them, it offers the cheapest and most versatile option.

Setting up your first website in WordPress is a great idea for so many reasons. If you are unsure about which business you want to go into, setting up a WordPress site, whether it’s hosted or self-hosted, is a cheap way of making a mistake if you decide to change your mind and do something else, so there is little or no risk. You can get some WordPress experience through trial and error for very little cost that you can take with you to your next website or just perfect the website you already have.

For those with a very limited budget is can seem that hosting your website at WordPress.com is the best option, as there is no cash outlay, no real technical skills are required and being hosted on the WordPress site you would presume it would be very secure so no likelihood of anyone hacking into your website. Although there are hundreds of free and paid WordPress templates available, you may want more flexibility on how that template looks. You may want to change the color scheme or change an image and customize the WordPress template more to your liking and for this you need access to the templates css (cascading style sheets) files. This is a paid upgrade option for those websites hosted at WordPress.com.

Many WordPress templates will come with a variety of options so that you can edit the template very easily from your WordPress dashboard. Just look out for these within the “”add new template”” option on your dashboard. To edit an image or a header and that option doesn’t appear in within the template dashboard, you need access to the images located in the hosting file, which you do not have access to. So just be aware of this.

Another thing you need to take into consideration is both your technical knowledge as well as the software you have available to actually edit your images. If you don’t have technical knowledge nor editing software then you should look for templates that you won’t want to edit in any way. This goes for self hosted WordPress websites too.

Also, if you want to offer free reports or audios to the visitors of your website, you will be unable to upload them to your WordPress site as you don’t have hosting access. Depending on how you see your website developing this may or may not affect your decision on choosing a WordPress hosted website or not.

Please note that your URL, or web address, will be a subdomain of WordPress, for example mychosensite.wordpress.com and it doesn’t really give a professional image to your business, however it will make you more confident using your WordPress website. You can always buy a domain and forward it to your WordPress.com website if you decide to keep this as your main website.

Most bloggers have finally realized that if they want to rank in the search engines competitively for any term then they are going to need to build lots of content and links to their site. The problem now is that a lot of bloggers are beginning to build links but there not doing it effectively. It doesn’t take much learning to start link building more effectively it’s just that most people don’t share the information that you need and it can hurt your rankings.

The most common mistake people make when building their links is that they don’t use any anchor text or they use an anchor text completely irrelevant to their blog. Now a link is a link, I’ll admit that but if you plan on ranking for any keywords then you need to use those keywords as your anchor text. You should also make sure that you’re using an anchor text when you post links and also make sure that the anchor text is a keyword or phrase that you’re optimizing your blog for. Over time as you build links with anchor text you’ll start for ranking for the terms you use as anchor text and this can bring in tons of targeted traffic to your blog. You should make sure to switch up your anchor text’s and use a handful of them when you build your links so that it seems completely natural.

The next mistake people are making when building links to their blog is that they are only building the links to their homepage. Now building links to your homepage is great and all, but you need to also build links to your blog posts and pages. These are known as deeplinks and are highly valuable when it comes to search engine rankings. If you can write good content then this will result in the most deeplinks as people use your material, but you can also submit to deeplink directories and article directories. When you first start out blogging you’ll most likely have no clue what you should do in order to make your blog more search engine optimized, and if you don’t then you need to learn quickly. Without properly making sure that your blog is ready for the search engines in the early stages, you could easily miss something important and then not notice it for awhile. This is why I find it so important to make sure that you follow certain steps each time you start a fresh blog. If you follow the simple steps I’m about to outline for you then you should be able to have search engine traffic coming into your blog within a week from starting it. There is more you can do then just the things listed here to make your blog even more SEO optimized, but if you follow these steps it’s a good start for now if you don’t know what else to do.

The first thing that you should do is make sure that you change the permalink structure in the wordpress admin section, and also make sure that you allow search engines to crawl the site. There is an option near the permalink structure option that will show you whether or not you’re allowing or blocking search engines, so make sure that this is switched to allowing the search engines. I once made the mistake of not checking this for a couple months and wondered why my blog had no indexed pages, and sure enough it’s because I was blocking them from crawling my site, so make sure you choose the right option.

After you do those two simple things you can then install the all-in-one SEO plug-in for wordpress which will allow you too choose the title, keyword and description for each page of your blog. These titles, keywords and descriptions are what the search engines will be reading when displaying their results so make sure that you optimize this section as best you can. The more searched phrases that you can get rankings for on the search engines the more traffic you’ll end up getting, so make sure that you take the time to set the proper titles, keywords and descriptions for each page and post.

There are now two more plug-ins that you should download to finish off this quick process and that’s the Google Sitemap Generator and KB Robot Txt plug-in. This will help your blog get more search engine traffic and will help your blog get its pages indexed faster in the search engines. It takes only a mere five minutes to set-up the two plug-ins so that there functional.

Now you just about have a nicely SEO’d wordpress blog that you can begin filling up with blog posts for the search engines. From here you spend a bit of time each day submitting to some blog directories, social bookmarking sites and comments on other blogs. All of these techniques will help keep your SEO on good track and after a month or two of doing this you should begin seeing that you have some nice rankings in the search engines. Of course the more searched the phrases you rank for the more traffic you’ll get so try your best to rank for the most searched keywords in your niche. Sometimes these keywords can take months to get rankings for, so don’t become discouraged if it doesn’t happen overnight. Some keywords will lots of competition will be really hard to get, but if you ever do get it then you could strike rich with the amount of traffic you’d get. You’d be surprised at how many different keywords you could rank for with a blog, and it doesn’t take long to start getting those rankings if you put in a bit of work.

A lot of bloggers who run either one or a few blogs have been looking into expanding their reach and creating what’s known as a blog network. There are lots of companies who own blog networks nowadays and more are created each day, but only a select few of them are well known and profitable. You can’t expect too be able too run a blog network on your own and that’s the main mistake a lot of bloggers are doing. They think that they can do everything, but the fact is there is only so much time in a day and you won’t be able to do everything needed by yourself if you want too become successful. The one thing all the profitable and well known blog networks have in common is that they outsource a lot of the tedious work and capitalize on cheap outsourcing rates around the web.

Outsourcing too international countries has become a popular way for webmasters too get work done for the lowest possible rates and it’s vital to a blog network. If you want to run a blog network you’ll need an entire team of people working for you, and you’ll basically need to spend your time managing the workers and also working on the small details.

To have any success with a blog network it will take a lot of time as you need to establish each one of the blogs in their market. This isn’t an easy task for one blog let alone multiple blogs so make sure you’re ready to put in the time and work. At first you’ll only need to be concerned about content and should you hire a couple freelance writers to complete some article packs for you on the niches you’ve chosen for your blog network. Add the articles to post on the blogs once daily and timestamp each article accordingly so that you don’t need to go to each blog each day to make the post. In these early stages you’ll want to make sure you install all your stat counters so that everything is ready to be tracked. Once the content begins too compile on the blogs and they start getting indexed in Google then you’ll need to start finding link builders to build some links. You won’t need too many links in the beginning and should only get a few of them so that you gain some SE recognition. A lot of links can be built down the road for free once you become popular so don’t spend too much money on link building. The most important part to spend money on is the content and you should make sure you have lots of it.

There is a lot more to running a blog network, but this guide should give you a brief outline of what you’re thinking about getting into. Unless you have a fairly nice budget then don’t even consider doing it because you won’t stand a chance. You’ll just burn yourself out quickly and then become bored with blogging in general. You can’t do something that isn’t possible so realize early that if you want to run a blog network you’ll need to outsource most of the work. This means you’ll be running in the negatives for the first few months and then you may start moving into the green. There is a chance you won’t even move into the profits though and this is the risk you take when starting a blog network.
