Free Hosting vs. Paid Hosting

If you’re just starting out in the webmaster arena then you’ll probably either already be debating between a free host or paid host or you will be soon. A lot of new webmasters aren’t too confident with what there doing and feel that they may not know how to do anything which is one of the reasons why people choose using a free host. There are tons of free blog hosts out there which allow you too create your very own blog on their servers for no charge at all. This means you could potentially make money without ever spending a dime of your own money, but there are downsides to using a free host.

Sure most people talk about how new webmasters should use a free host because it will allow them to test out how to run a blog and will give them valuable experience. Now this is correct in the fact that the person would learn what it takes too run a blog, but then once they do feel confident with blogging they’ll want too move on to their own domain. Now the problem with this is that you won’t be able too take your blog with you and therefore you’ll need to start from scratch from again which isn’t always fun. This is why I recommend starting out with your own paid hosting right from the beginning. For the price that it costs for a domain and a small blog hosting package nowadays there is no reason too be using free hosts.

It will cost you no more then $20 too get your first domain and first months of hosting paid for and from there you can begin making your blog and you actually will own it. On a free blog host you don’t really ever own your blog, but with your own domain and hosting you’re the complete owner to your blog and nobody will be able too take that from you. Free blog hosts have the possibilities of closing down in the future and then all of your hard work would also be lost.

I tend to not enjoy leaving my blogs in the hands of someone else and I personally have never used a free blog host and never will. When you have a blog on its own domain then you’ll easily be able too sell links, banners and more once you get traffic.

The benefits of coughing up $20 to own your blog is well worth it and can save you from lots of headaches down the road. You never want too leave your web properties in the hand of someone else and by using a free blog host you’re doing exactly this. Now for children and teenagers I understand using a free blog host, but if you’re an adult and serious about giving the online world a chance then you shouldn’t be scared about paying $20 for a domain and hosting as this will be the least of your investments.

There are countless articles published on the internet talking about how you can build traffic to your blog and there seems to be an unlimited amount of resources to building your traffic. The only problem is that most of the traffic generation techniques that are being taught don’t send return visitors. I simply mean that you may get traffic by completing certain things like article marketing, social bookmarking and link building but the traffic typically won’t sustain and everyday you’ll need to regain the traffic. The point of blogging is to have a solid readership that comes back to your blog on a daily basis, and this is when you can start making good money with your blog so you need to do your best at retaining visitors. There are some great methods at retaining your visitors and building a readership and I’m going to briefly talk about some of these methods with you right now.

Unique Themes

You should make sure that your blog uses a unique theme, simply because too many people use the free blog themes and they don’t stand out anymore. If you use a unique theme that is attractive you can build your blogs branding while also gaining a solid readership. People are also more inclined to read blogs that are designed nicely according to surveys recently conducted. You can buy a coded WordPress theme for under $200 nowadays on many webmaster forums so the investment isn’t going to make you reach too deeply into your pockets.

Great Content

An attractive theme isn’t going to be the only thing you need in order to stand out from the rest of the blogging world and you’re going to need to put a lot of effort into your content as well. Writing blog posts is an ongoing process that you need to do everyday, but you need to make sure that you do in fact post daily so that when you begin to grow a readership they have content to read that is fresh. The search engines also love content so the more you post on your blog with useful content the more search engine placements you’ll begin ranking for.

RSS Feed Subscriber

You need to make sure you utilize the RSS feed subscriber which allows your readers to read your blog from a number of different blog readers on the internet. The more RSS feed subscribers you have the better because this means that people want to keep your blog nearby so they can continue reading it. You should have a widget in your header or sidebar that allows all of your readers to join your RSS feed and there is also a plug-in that you should use. The plug-in will post a short line at the bottom of each of your blog posts automatically that asks the reader to join your RSS feed and gives them the link to join. This is a great way at reminding people about your RSS feed and can result in more readership.

As you can tell there are quite a few methods that you can use to make your readership stick around and keep coming back to your blog. You should also keep reading the internet for other great sources because there are more ways to retain your blog readership other then the ones I listed above. You should also be trying to make your blog more enjoyable for the readers because after all the success of your blog depends solely on the readers.

New to WordPress – How to Start a Free Blog
Are you new to WordPress? There is no need to worry as here are the simple steps to start using WordPress in creating free blogs. The following are the 9 steps in using WordPress to start blogging:
Step 1: Sign up for a free WordPress account
The very first step is to visit http://wordpress.com and register for a free WordPress account with only a valid email address. An email address is used for only one WordPress account only.

Step 2: Entering information
Next, you would have to choose a username which no other users are using and password. After reading the terms and condition and if you agree with these, you will be directed to a page. Here, one can choose to start blogging straight away or leave until you have time to start creating blogs.

Step 3: Creating new blog
To start, a name for your blog domain is required and the name ends with ‘.wordpress.com’ to make it easier for visitors to access the blog pages that they want to visit by typing the name into their internet browsers. The domain name cannot be changed once decided, but users choose put titles of their blog and users can change these anytime. Users can choose the languages and decide whether their blog pages are opened for public or for members only. If a user chose public viewing, search engines will be able to search these.

Step 4: Active account
An account is active when every detail in the previous step has been filled in. you will be notified when you have completed that step and an email will be sent to confirm the login details.

Step 5: WordPress Dashboard
Once login details are confirmed, you can log into you own WordPress blog and you can start personalizing your dashboard. Here, you can choose the themes, colour, updating profile, adding users, writing posts and designing your blog page. Whenever you come across a problem that you cannot figure out, there is always a help section and forums where you can search and ask for solutions to the problems.

Step 6: Dashboard Toolbar
The toolbar allows users to navigate WordPress for creating posts, personalization and adding additional features for easy access.

Step 7: Choosing a Theme
Users can choose from a huge variety of themes to suit their taste and personalize the pages to their own creativity. From the dashboard toolbar, direct your mouse to ‘Presentation’ tab and select ‘Themes’ to choose which themes that you like. You can choose according to the content of your blog. After some time fiddling around, you will turn into an expert and from then you can upload other features that suit your blog.

Step 8: Sidebars and widgets
Adding widgets allow customization of the sidebar of blogs and this feature can be found under the ‘Presentation’ tab in the dashboard toolbar. Widgets let the users to add features such as RSS feeds, calendar, search tools and text boxes and this is much easier with only the used of the mouse without the need to enter codes.

Step 9: First blog post
You are ready to start writing up your blog posts once you are familiar with the features. Coming up with a title and there you go: you can start writing up. When you are done with writing and customization, you can just click on ‘Publish’ button and the post is there in your blog page.
