When you blog you’ll need to build external links to your blog so that the search engines think you’re worth ranking high. The more links you have pointing to your blog the better it will be for your search engine rankings and you should notice solid traffic over time. Search engine traffic isn’t built over night and you’ll need to spend countless months building links to your blog before you see much of a profit. You should start seeing some profit after a couple months but it takes roughly a year before making any serious money off of a blog. In order to keep your blog alive for a year though and to make it successful you’ll need to constantly build incoming links to your blog. There are different methods for doing this and you should make sure you use them at your own risk and understand the risk involved before trying out each method. Typically the methods are safe but there is a chance that you could get banned. If you want to start getting countless amounts of targeted search engine traffic then you need to start working immediately on building links. There is never too many links as long as they are built naturally.

The first way to begin building backlinks for your site should be through free methods such as article submissions, directory submissions, social bookmarking and blog commenting. All of these methods can bring you a lot of search engine traffic over time but you should make sure that there do-follow links before spending your time submitting. If it isn’t a do-follow link then it still can bring traffic to your blog but typically the link won’t be worth much.

The second way to accumulate external links is through using other sites and blogs that you already own on the same topic and link to it. This is not considered a safe practise but typically if the blogs are on separate IP’s then you should be fine. Many people run multiple blogs and link them together for the SEO benefits and nothing happens so although there is a risk it’s slim. Don’t make the links appear like link farms is vital though but other then that you should be fine. You can also exchange links with other webmasters, which should be done in three way exchanges. You should have a site or blog where you can put other people’s links on and then have them link to the blog that you’re trying to build links for. If you do it this way then you will have one way links in the eyes of the search engines and if there on topic to your blog then they should help your search rankings considerably.

The final way you can build links for your blog is by buying them which although is frowned upon by the search engines it’s still done by most webmasters. As long as the link looks natural then typically you should be safe with the search engines, and if you manage to buy some nice page rank links then you can boost your page rank the next time it updates which is a huge benefit for your search engine rankings.

If you have a blog that you’ve been filling up with content but the traffic has yet to start pouring in then you might need to start working on some marketing tactics to build your blog traffic. The first and most important thing is that you have lots of good content on your blog before you start working on getting much traffic to your blog. The best way to get traffic is through search engines but you need to rank for keywords in order to start getting search engine traffic and that isn’t easy to do. One of the best ways to get traffic is through articles submissions which you should try and do on a weekly basis so that you continually build traffic through it. Some of the article directories are already very established sites and have tons of traffic so posting articles in these directories with your link to your blog is very smart. You need to make sure that you follow the directories rules which are usually straightforward and then you will be on your way to getting traffic. The articles remain on the site permanently as well so if you keep the blog then you’ll always get traffic from your article submissions.

Other ways to gain traffic are through directory submissions and social bookmarking. These can bring lots of traffic and there basically the same except in one way which is directory submission traffic usually is slow and continuous where social bookmarks are usually fast and big amounts of traffic. As time goes on you’ll begin ranking better in the search engines if you’ve been working hard building links and then your traffic will go through the roof. If you can hold a steady stream of traffic up until you start getting search engine traffic then you’ve done a great job at creating a successful blog.

Its tough even deciding on where to begin with discussing link building with all of you but it’s definitely something that needs to be addressed amongst all of us bloggers. Link building is the single most important aspect of blogging apart from your content. We all already know that content is absolute king when it comes to blogging and you won’t retain visitors without good content, and you also won’t see too much search engine traffic. If you have your content figured out and you got a steady stream of traffic beginning to pick up on your blog then you might be considering a link building campaign. There are lots of ways you can build links as a blogger and all of them I feel are vital to maximizing your exposure. If you only focus on getting one type of backlink then you’ll be missing to be much exposure that you could otherwise be getting if you just planned your campaign out. I always make sure I have a solid plan written out before I begin any link building campaign, and I also accompany the written plan with an excel sheet to record the data. I like knowing how much I do each day so that I can add it all up at the end of each month to see how my campaign did and to see if I noticed any results. If I notice results that for the better then I usually keeps the same plan for the next month minus a few tweaks. If I notice that the results have worsened from previous months then I will re-look through my data and make needed changes. Having everything written down allows for it to be a lot more organized and a lot more effective.

There are tons of ways to naturally attain links for your blog and you need to try and incorporate as many of the different options as possible when working on link building. Link building is a constant trait of a blogger so make sure you’re willing to spend at least a half hour each day building links before you begin blogging. Building links I find is the most strenuous part of blogging, but it needs to be done so either you need to spend the time doing it yourself or you need to hire someone who can do it for you. Hiring someone isn’t always that bad, but typically you shouldn’t hire anyone to work on your blog before its making profit because you don’t know if it will even make money. I generally will wait until I see some traffic and a couple conversions on a blog before I really start pushing the link building and content.

Importance of Directories for Bloggers

A lot of people in the online business say that directory submissions are played out and not worth there weight and gold anymore. I disagree with this completely though and I feel that directory submissions are basically mandatory for bloggers. Directory submissions won’t help bring in direct traffic to your blog, but they do build your backlinks up fairly quickly and therefore boost your SERP rankings. You’re much better off taking your time with directory submissions and not doing them all at once. You’ll notice a brief increase in SE traffic from submitting to directories quickly, but if you take your time and only do a few everyday then you’ll notice a more steady flow of SE traffic. There are both free and paid directories that you can submit to and I personally don’t use any of the paid directories. Either I feel there not worth the value or in some cases just too costly for a blogger to spend on directory submissions.

Instead of spending money on directory submissions I simply submit to five directories everyday that I haven’t used before and this way I’m getting a guaranteed five backlinks each day for my blog. Google will notice that backlinks are being built everyday on a consistent basis and most importantly the links will seem naturally built to Google which is vital. When you submit to too many directories at once you run the chance of Google thinking that your submissions were done through automation which would hurt your SERP rankings. Being completely natural is the only way for you to go when building links to your blog and that’s why submitting to only 3-10 directories daily is ideal.

Since you’ll be submitting to so many directories there isn’t really a need to list any here because you’ll end up finding them anyways. There are regular directories, blog directories and niche directories, now you’ll want to submit to all three types of directories on a regular basis. Regular directories allow any type of site from almost any category you could imagine, blog directories only accept blogs and niche directories will only accept sites/blogs from the niche that the directory is about. I find that blog directories and niche directories hold good value so you should seek these types of directories out first and then move on to regular directories. There are hundreds of directory lists with thousands of directories on them which you can find easily on the internet. One of the best resources that I use for finding directories is DirectoryCritic.com which always has an updated list of directories. They also have niche directories so it’s a site worth checking out.

You’ll notice that some directories take awhile before accepting your submission but that is fine and don’t expect them to do it in one day every time. Directory owners are usually busy approving and rejecting hundreds of submissions each day so sometimes they won’t get to yours for awhile. One last thing that you need to know about directories is that some will require a reciprocal link and some won’t. I personally only submit to directories that don’t need a reciprocal link unless it’s a good blog directory or niche directory. There isn’t any reason a regular directory should ask for a reciprocal though and generally when I come across ones that do I skip them.

Bloggers absolutely need to obtain backlinks on their blogs or they won’t ever result too much and there will be hardly any traffic. Ideally as your blog ages you should be getting search engine traffic and if you’re not then it’s probably due to not having enough backlinks pointing to your blog. You should not only work on getting backlinks for your homepage but also for important blog posts and pages. These are called deeplinks and help a lot when you’re trying to rank in the search engines. All of the search engines use different methods for ranking sites but one of the main techniques used is through backlinks. If you have a lot of relevant backlinks on the topic of your blog pointing to the posts and pages then you’ll generally have good search engine rankings. If you have only lousy links that aren’t even on topic with your blog then you will need to begin looking for some better ranking links so that you can then begin ranking better. Many forums can offer good link opportunities but you can also use many techniques to find high page rank links to get backlinks on.

You should start building links for your blog as soon as you begin posting on it and make sure though that you only use natural methods of building backlinks and none other or else you face the risk of getting banned by the search engines. Article submissions, social bookmarking and directory submissions are all things you should do in the early existence of your blog. Make sure you spread your time out amongst these different options so that you build links in many different areas. You should also become active on blogs in your niche so that you can begin gaining some reputation. It doesn’t take long for the owner of a blog to notice someone commenting daily on their blog and in most cases as long as you’re not spamming the owner will usually begin talking with you. This can result in future joint ventures and having relationships with the other bloggers in your niche is vital to the success of your blog.

There is never a time that you shouldn’t be looking to build links to your blog, but over time you’ll get help from that through link bait. This is where you post a good article or report on your blog and people link to it and post it on there blog. This can gain you hundreds of backlinks a day and is the most effective method to one way link building. Blogging is a ton of work and you haven’t already notice this then you soon will as you start building backlinks and having to post daily to your blog.

Try exchanging links with other bloggers in your niche, but make sure you don’t crowd your blog up too much with other people’s links. Try spreading the other people’s links across different pages so that it doesn’t eat away at your page rank juice. Only exchange links with blogs that are the same calibre as your blog and don’t accept a link exchange with a blog that isn’t updated.

Over time link building becomes easier and takes a lot less time but in the beginning you need to set-up the blog to ensure it will do well in the search engines. Building links is part of ensuring that traffic from the search engines is steady and this is why every serious blogger needs to allocate the right amount of time each day for building links.
