Follow people on Twitter

Follow people on Twitter

Twitter one of the newer social networking websites out there; it’s a fun place to spend some time just looking around. A quick and free sign up will have you hopping around looking at other people on Twitter. You can also add your friends by using the email invite button, or the email match to see if some of your contacts are already on Twitter.

One of the coolest things about Twitter is the fact that you can look for others by name, or you can look at the tab that says “suggested matches”. These are the people Twitter thinks you should find interesting. Plus there seems to be several celebrities that are on this site too. A fun thing to do is to look up a celebrity and see who they are following, and who’s following them. It’s a quick way to add up people you want to follow at times. Someone you may not have thought of that is famous, and they are following all you do is go to the next pages and follow that other person too.

People will add you to who they are following too. It’s really neat to see that people you don’t even know would like to follow what’s going on with you. Maybe you write a blog that they find interesting, or some other reason. But really who cares as long as they don’t turn out to be a stalker, to get a message saying someone is following you is just a good feeling.

You can also pull up different topics, say you love “botany”, pull up the word and see if there might be others who are into botany. Follow them and perhaps you will learn more about the topic. Or you can find a friend who you can talk to about a subject that interests you both.

As with anything on the internet there may be some things that are inappropriate for younger kids. So you may want to just check if you son or daughter are on Twitter what they are following. Make sure that you tell them not too discuss any personal information with others either, but that’s on all kinds of websites you just need to be careful.

Following people on Twitter is so easy to do, once you find a person who you’d like to keep track of, just click on the follow button placed right below their picture or icon. Find some lifelong friends that you may never have met had it not been for Twitter. Or perhaps you’re a person who is shy in social settings. This is a way that you won’t need to go out of your house to meet someone. No more feeling awkward as your not sure what to say. Online it’s a lot easier to talk, your not face to face with someone, your not wondering if there is food in your teeth, or how you look. Try out Twitter to see if you can meet some great friends.

How I Crashed My WordPress Site (forever)

How I Crashed My WordPress Site (forever)

I was making an instructional video on the topic of installing WordPress onto a domain.  In order to show the process, I was using my own account, by installing WordPress on one of my own domains.  I completed the video and was very pleased with the results.

I went to my main domain to upload the video and was shocked to find that my site was gone and in its place, the default template you get when you first install WordPress onto a domain.  Confused and panicking, I called Bluehost (the greatest hosting company out there) thinking they would have a way of fixing what I had done to my site.

I heard the words that everyone who has a site on the internet fears hearing: “”I am very sorry ma’am, but there are no backups to roll your site back to.  Your content is gone and not recoverable.””

Having always assumed that my site was being automatically backed up, I was shocked to say the least.  How could this happen?  Technical support informed me that my account had long ago exceeded 2 gigabytes, and that after the 2 gig size has been reached, they cannot guarantee that the sites will be automatically backed up.  In fact, it is very unlikely that the sites will be (automatically) backed up.

So what have I learned about hosting that could help you in the future?

That once your account (not just your site) gets bigger than 2 gig, it can and will no longer be backed up automatically.  You either need to go to your hosting and back it up yourself, or add a plugin that will do it for you.
That you do not get any warning that lets you know you are close or have exceeded the 2 gig limit.  But you can go into your C-Panel (the back end of your hosting) and check the file space and usage anytime to see how close you are to the 2 gig point.
You can backup your site yourself and I highly recommend that you do this.
Bluehost has wonderful tutorials that will walk you through this process.  Go to tutorials.bluehost.com for the best info available.
That PARKED domains are redirected to your main domain.  What you do to a parked domain, you will be doing to your main domain.  (Remember I installed WordPress on a domain I wasn’t using? It was a parked domain.)
I highly recommend that you learn all you can about your hosting package.  Bluehost offers C-Panel which is a user friendly, highly intuitive program allowing end users (you) to manage your hosting/sites/account yourself. Read up on all that you can get your hands on from your Hosting company.
Wherever possible, use other sites to upload content to. For example, did you know that you can create the coolest sales page in Twitwall?  And you can host your videos on YouTube and so on.  Get really creative and monitor the size of your account frequently.

What causes your site to exceed 2 gig?

For one thing, it is not just any one site that you have hosted that is considered in the size-it is your

whole ACCOUNT.
If you have a couple of sites hosted, they are both factored in on the size.
Extra templates, unnecessary plugins, files you don’t use, and too many video and audio files.
Files in your directory.  If you don’t use the file any longer, take it out of your directory.

So please, go and create a backup of your site (s).  Never assume anything.

Oh, and I still highly recommend Bluehost.

10 Useful WordPress Plugins

10 Useful WordPress Plugins

We have been using WordPress for several weeks now and one of the things I love about this tool is the amount of plugins available. Everytime we want to do something new we just Google a few words and chances are we will find a WordPress plugin that does what we need. Another great feature is that since it’s open source we can easily change any plugin to suit our needs.

So here’s a list of a few plugins (no particular order) we use on a regular basis for our customers.

1 – TinyMCE Advanced

WordPress uses TineMCE as it’s WYSIWYG editor, this open source HTML editor is filled with features that are for most part hidden in WordPress. TineMCE advanced allows you to activate a few of theses features back on. For example the creation of tables and context menus within the editor. The user interface is simple to use, just drag and drop the features you want to activate.

2 – All in one SEO pack

SEO is an important part of your web design today, this plugin allows you to change the title, description and meta tags for your pages and posts.

3 – Exclude page from navigation

This plugin allows you to hide certain pages from your website navigation (menus) Useful if you want to create pages that are not accessible from any menus.

4 – qTranslate

Essential for all multilingual websites. qTranslate allows us to easely create multilingual posts and pages. Additional plugins have been created that uses the qTranslation functionality (Meta tag, Sitemap)

5 – Viper’s video quicktag

This plugin will add a toolbar in your editor that allows you to add different video formats (Youtube and friends) I like this plugin beacause it’s simple to use with youtube juste paste the url of the video page and voila!

6 – WP-Filemanager

This is my most recent discovery, creating a lot of themes for clients I always had to upload additional images to themes folders which took some time and was a pain. This plugin gives us a web base file browser so we can manage the files that are on our webserver.

7 – NextGen

NextGen is a picture gallery manager that offers a good user interface to manage your pictures. It comes with a few gallery layouts and several other plugins have been created that offers additional layouts. NextGen integrates itself in the editor toolbar so it’s easy to insert picture galleries in posts.

8 – Google XML sitemap

Great little plugin that creates an XML sitemap and submit’s it to Google. A sitemap is a file with the list of all your pages on your website. This file is used by search engines to help them scan your website pages.

9 – Google analytics

Allows us to include our Google Analytic javascript code in our website. One of the features I like of this version (because there are a lot of Google analytic plugins) is that we can paste the actual javascript code. This allows us to add other tracking code, for example quantcast, beezilla and so on, at the same time.

10 – Inline PHP

This one is a little more technical, it’s a plugin that allows us to include php server code within our posts and pages. Very useful for us programmers maybe a little less interesting for non programmers.

Making Your Job Easier with Software

Webmasters have the benefit of having a wide range of different software tools that can be used to make your job easier. A lot of being webmaster means doing repetitive work and it can take a heck of a lot of time to complete these tedious repetitive tasks. You could choose to hire people to complete these tasks, but in the long-run you’ll be much better off purchasing software to make your life easier. There are tools for all sorts of different webmaster tasks like article submissions, social bookmarking, blog automaters and much more. Article Submissions

There are plenty of software programs out there that you can buy which will make your article submissions automated. You’ll be able to submit to hundreds or thousands of article directories within roughly an hour rather then weeks. You can find one of these software programs for around $100 and that will usually mean free lifetime updates as well. This type of tool is invaluable as you’ll gain tons of backlinks and traffic from these article submissions.

Social Bookmarking

We all know how much of a pain it can be to go from website to website submitting your webpages, but if you want the traffic you got to do the work. Social bookmarking websites bring lots of traffic and some of them even give you a do-follow backlink which will increase your SERP’s. You won’t even need your own accounts with these software programs because they have the power of making and approving the accounts for you. Social bookmarking demon would be your best tool to get and it submits to a lot of different popular bookmarking websites in the matter of minutes.

Directory Submissions

Directory submissions take a long time to complete we all know this, but with an automated directory submission software program you can spend minutes on your submissions. These tools will generally be able to submit to thousands of directories for you and most of the time it’s automated. Some you’ll need to type in codes to activate the submission, but it will still save you hours upon hours of submitting time.

Are time is precious and as a webmaster it always seems like we never have enough time in the day to complete our work. If you want to start working smarter instead of harder then you needs to invest some money in the software that will assist you. There are new programs coming out everyday that can assist your adventure to making money, and like the old saying goes you need to spend money to make money. I believe this holds true online. Of course you can make money without spending money, but if you want to make any serious amounts of money online you need to invest in yourself.

Having a Great WordPress Theme in Time For Warcraft Cataclysm

Having a Great WordPress Theme in Time For Warcraft Cataclysm

Updating Your WordPress Theme In Time For Warcraft Cataclysm

The web is full of sites promoting or talking about Warcraft, but many look and feel quite dated and in need of an overhaul.

Perhaps like many people looking forward to the Cataclysm expansion, you are often looking through the web for sites updated with the latest news. Only to find that the sites you find look very dated and have graphics that pre-date The Burning Crusade.

Of course content is king, but if the look and feel of a site seems out of place, then many people will assume the worst and “”bounce”” straight back out again without so much as a glance at your content.

That’s not something you want.

Like visiting a distant relative or changing your tyres, updating your web page to look and feel new and fresh is not something many look forward to. But just like those things, it is something you really should do now and again.

Technically it can seem a little daunting. Changing the theme and look of a site might mean tinkering under the hood at all the HTML and CSS. But it really shouldn’t have to. There is really nothing that technical about changing your WordPress theme, or even starting a new blog from scratch for that matter.

There are perhaps three thousand sites on the web at the moment that could do with an update. Guild site, information, support, or just general Warcraft chit-chat. So installing WordPress from a host that offers a one click solution – then installing a theme which probably takes no more than seven clicks really is a piece of cake.

Why WordPress? Well search engines love it. It’s rock solid stable, and even a complete first timer can have a pleasing looking, and very functional site up in a matter of minutes. It’s hard to find any downside.

If the web-host offers one click installation, and the theme provider gives you a good “”over the shoulder”” tutorial on how to install one in less than sixty seconds – then there really is nothing to lose. No tech skills required.

So if you have a well run site promoting or discussing Warcraft, get yourself up to date. It’s vital to have lots of information, but if it isn’t displayed in a way that looks modern and reflective of the way the game is played now, then many visitors to your site will never spend enough time there to find out just how good you are.

Search the internet for WordPress themes, preferably ones that come with video tutorials. Soon you’ll be bang up to date.

PHP Programmers, the Best Foil in the Customizing of Your WordPress Website

PHP Programmers, the Best Foil in the Customizing of Your WordPress Website

What is the best thing to do when you need to have a website for your own? You can always take the one from the wordpress. It provides you with the basic website structure and all that you need to start it. But as time passes and you need to do some enhancements in your site then you look for the plugins available there. But not all the plugins are of your help as they are for the general use and not for the specific one and so is the case with the themes and templates. At times you may not be happy with the available themes and templates and want some changes in them and you need to do some changes as per your needs. What do you do?

The solution is quite simple. You can take help of any one who has the expertise in this field. This may be a company or an individual. If you go for a company the chances are that you will have to pay a hefty amount for even a simple plugin. So it is better to go for the second option. And here comes the man you know as the freelance programmer. This freelance web developer who is expert of this task has solution to all your problems and he can fix the things for you. He is not only a wordpress plugin developer but he can also create the custom wordpress themes and custom wordpress templates for your website and will give your website a whole new look.

Usually PHP is considered the best language among the languages that are used in the website development and the basic reason behind this fact is its smoothness. It is easy to learn and does not make your web page heavy and it takes relatively less time to load. The PHP programmer is usually acquainted with the other supporting things as My SQL, apache and Linux as they all combined together make a website. And what an interesting thing they all are open source or you can say free.

The reason the most of the PHP is good in unison with wordpress is that the plugins in wordpress are mostly designed in the PHP scripting language and a wordpress developer knows it well. The smoothness of the PHP can be understood by the fact that the facebook application developers chose it over other languages to design the interface of facebook and the pages run smooth, you all know.

Along with the development of new websites, PHP is the perfect foil in the creation of the website clones, website cloning, which is becoming popular nowadays is usually done in PHP, and is one reason for the growth of the freelance PHP developers.

Making Use of Gallery WordPress Themes1

Making Use of Gallery WordPress Themes

Are you sick and tired of looking for the best WordPress theme that is best suited for your blog? Well if you are then you don’t have to worry because you are not alone knowing that there are also a lot individuals that own a blog site which experience the same problem as yours. Now the solution for this problem is the Gallery WordPress theme.

Gallery WordPress themes is a thematic child theme, yes you heard me right, this is designed is made by Chris Wallace. This WordPress themes isn’t exactly a new concept, but this is what I swear, that by the time you will see this theme you will be surely amazed. Go on reading this article, and I will discuss to you one by one the features of this theme and how to set it up as well as how to add content on your blog.

By the time you get the Gallery WordPress Themes, the first thing that you should know is on how to install it. You should always remember that this is a child theme and because it is a child theme then the first and the most important thing that you should do first is to upload both the parent theme and the child theme, to do this you have to download Thematic theme and extract the folder and then after upload it to your /wp-content/themes/ directory. Then after doing that first step, next is to download the Gallery, extract the folder again and upload it again in your /wp-content/themes/ directory. After doing all of the uploading task, you have to log-in now to your WordPress admin panel, look for the Appearance and find Themes and them activate the “”Gallery”” theme that you have recently uploaded.

After all the set up is done and found out that all is working well and functional, then now is the time to add content. But prior to this you should know first details about Thumbnail Sizing. I make it a point that you should know about this because Gallery WordPress Theme really depends heavily on thumbnail images that sizes 125 x 125, to make sure on the size you can go to WordPress options and set to the amount to of the thumbnail size that you require. For more additional control of images, you might want to know on using the Max Image Size Control plugin. By knowing this plugin and as well using it you won’t constantly resize the images and would allow you to let WordPress do the hard work for you. If ever you are making use of screenshots of web pages on your gallery items then I would suggest to you the ScreenGrab, it is an add-on intented for FireFox, which will definitely help you in is saving full-page screenshots very easily.

Finally we are now about to add a content by using this WordPress theme, due to popular demand, there is a post setting panel added in version 1.1 on this Gallery WordPress Theme, by doing this way you won’t have to mess around various custom fields.
