Installing a WordPress Theme Yourself

Having a WordPress theme for your blog can be a really good decision because an apt theme conveys two things: 1- You care a lot about the presentation of your blog. 2- You want the visitor or reader of your blog to derive the maximum utility or value from your blog through interaction and good user-experience.

Here is how you can install a WordPress theme.

1. Go to a blog or website that is known for WordPress themes. There are some of them who charge you to download the themes, those are high quality and are of the premium variety. It Is up to you if you want a free WordPress theme or buy one. Go to the category that is in sync with the theme of your blog, check the ‘demo’ to see how the theme may look on your blog.

2. Download the theme; it will be downloaded in the zipped format. Copy it to the wp-content or the ‘themes’ directory. You will find this folder in the location where you had installed WordPress.3. Now unzip the zipped file that has the theme.

4. Once you have unzipped, you will find a directory listed as wp-content/themes/theme_file, apart from the existing directory.

5. Now you can choose to retain the theme_file.zip or take it off.

6. Go to the WordPress Administrative Panel and choose Appearance.

7. The newly installed theme should be present. Now you just have to activate it, and you are all set to see the new theme on your blog.

There is also another option that will tell you how to install a WordPress theme. Use the built-in theme uploader, which can be accessed directly from the WordPress Administration Panel. Go to the appearance section in WordPress and choose the ‘theme’ section. Once there, you can click on ‘add new them’ to get started.

How to Install WordPress Themes

One of the most popular CMS systems going around the world today is WordPress. Much of it’s success is down to ease of use, and how beginner friendly the whole platform is. This ease of use also extends to installing WordPress themes, but sometimes you need a bit of a hand.

Starting from WordPress Version 2.7 onwards. You can now install WordPress themes straight from your admin section. Once logged in into the backend, go Appearance –> Add Themes. From here you can search through WordPress own back catalogue of templates. After choosing one it is just a few simple clicks and follow the steps to install it.

However you may not always be able to find the template you are looking for through this catalogue. Often it is hard to gauge just how well it will look on your site from a tiny thumbnail. In instances like this you can surf around the web looking for free WordPress themes.

Once you find a theme you like, you will need to download it to your own PC. It will likely be in either RAR or ZIP format, so you will need a unzipping tool. WinRar is free to download if the file has a.rar extension. Once unpackaged, you will need to FTP/Upload the files to your own webhost. Most webhosts put your files into the “”public_html”” folder so that is a good place to start. If your WordPress installation is in the root directory, you should be in the right place instantly on connection, otherwise you will need to navigate through the folders.

You then need to navigate through to the themes folder. The directory tree goes something like: public_html –> *WordPress installation folder* –> wp-content –>themes.

You can upload your unpackaged theme to this folder.

Then it is is a matter of logging back into your admin panel. Going Appearance –> Themes and activating your new theme. If on this screen you cannot see a thumbnail picture of the the theme you just uploaded. Try doing a refresh of the page by pressing f5 on your keyboard. If it still doesn’t show, make sure that when you uploaded the new theme, that it was placed into it’s own folder. If this still doesn’t resolve the problem you may have downloaded a dud package and you can either try downloading it again, or finding another theme.

Learning how to install WordPress themes just becomes second nature after a while. Especially once you work out the WordPress directory structure. Plus don’t forget that once you settle on a nice looking theme, you rarely change it again!

WordPress – Create a New WordPress Theme (1st in a Series)

WordPress is a wonderfully flexible blogging framework.

If you use WordPress much, you will eventually want to make some changes in the appearance of your blog.

Often the best way to give your blog a facelift is to create a new WordPress theme. The developers of WordPress have made this easy to do. This article tells you how to create a new theme. Future articles will tell you how to make visual modifications in your theme.

Note that this article presumes that you are developing on a PC or Mac and uploading your work to your Web site.

Here is the procedure for creating a new WordPress theme, in a nutshell:

1. Start with an existing theme that you want to modify.2. Copy that theme folder to a new theme folder.3. Edit the “”style”” css file in the new theme folder.4. Upload the theme folder to your Web site.5. From the WordPress Admin console, activate the new theme.

That is all you have to do.

The following sections provide detailed descriptions for implementing the above steps.

Start with an Existing Theme

Pick a theme that is already installed in your blog. It does not need to be activated, just installed. Pick one you like.

Copy the Them to a New Theme Folder

Both the old theme (the one you start with) and the new theme (the one you are creating) should be located in the themes folder of the wp-content folder.

Here is the hierarchy: main WordPress folder / wp-content / themes

If for example, you are copying the “”WordPress Default”” them to the “”John Doe”” theme, you will copy the “”default”” folder to the “”john-doe”” folder.

Edit the “”style”” css file in the new theme folder

Now that you have copied the old theme to your new theme folder, you need to edit the “”style”” css file.

Every theme has a “”style”” css file. That file starts out with some information that WordPress uses to display information about the style in the admin console. You will need to change this information. A skeletal version of this information looks like the following:

Your Web Site (if you have one)

Licensing Information

A filled in version would look something like the following:

Upload the Theme Folder to Your Web site

Using FTP or whatever system is in your editor/Web design software, upload the new theme folder to your Web site.

Activate the New Theme

(i) Log into your WordPress management console.(ii) On the left side of the console, about 1/2 way down, click on the “”Appearance”” link.(iii) Your theme should show up under “”Available Themes””, in the lower right hand side of the page.(iv) Click on the “”Activate”” link for your theme.

WordPress should now be using your theme.

Check the New Theme

If you want to check that you are actually using the new theme, do “”view page source”” and search for wp-content/themes/xxxxxxx where xxxxxxx is your theme name.
