Homepage Excerpts WordPress Plugin

I am glad to finally release Homepage Excerpts, a WordPress plugin that I have been developing with a friend for some time already. The plugin has two main objectives. The first one is to make blogs that use full posts on the homepage more search engine friendly. The second one is to give flexibility to people that want to use both full posts and excerpts on the homepage.

\n

Homepage Excerpts for SEO

\n

We are all aware that Google and other search engines penalize websites that contain duplicate content. Ideally, therefore, the content of your posts should be displayed fully in one location only, and that is the single post page.

\n

Most blogs, however, display full posts on the homepage as well, and the posts remain being displayed in full even when they slip out of the homepage into page two, three and so on.

\n

The Homepage Excerpts plugin can be used to reduce this duplicate content while keeping full posts on the homepage. Suppose you have 8 full posts on the homepage. Once you activate the plugin you will have the option to select how many posts to display fully in the homepage. The options will go from 1 up to 8. If you select 8, all your posts on the homepage will keep being displayed fully while all the other posts (the ones on page two, three, four and so on) will turn into excerpts.

\n

\"homepageexcerptsexample.gif\"

\n

Remember that new pages usually take one week or more to get indexed by search engines, so that by the time your single post page gets indexed the post will already be out of the homepage, and it will be displayed as an excerpt, removing the duplicate content issue.

\n

Apart from SEO benefits this change might also improve the user experience. Displaying only post excerpts on the subsequent pages will make it easier for readers to scan them swiftly while searching for the post that they are looking for.

\n

Homepage Excerpts for Layout

\n

The plugin can also be used if you want to use an hybrid layout on your homepage, displaying the most current posts in full and the older ones with an excerpt. On this blog usually I display the most current post in full while making the others show excerpts, so that the reader can scan swiftly through all of them. Some other people might want to display half of the posts on the homepage fully and the other half with excerpts. With the plugin you have complete control over this.

\n

\"homepageexcerpts.gif\"

\n

Notice that you can also select if the plugin should extract the custom excerpt from WordPress (the one that you insert manually when writing an entry) or if it should automatically grab the first X words of each post, where X is a number that can be specified on the options panel.

\n

Installation

\n

    \n

  1. Download and unzip the plugin
  2. \n

  3. Uploade the file homepage-excerpts.php to your plugin directory. (Usually
    \nlocated in wp-content/plugins/)
  4. \n

  5. Log into the WordPress control panel, then go into “Plugins” and activate the
    \nplugin
  6. \n

  7. Still inside the WordPress control panel go into “options” and then “Homepage Excerpts”
  8. \n

  9. Update the plugin options as appropriate
  10. \n

5,000 RSS Subscribers and Counting

On January of this year I had written down some goals for the blog. One of them was to reach 1,000 RSS subscribers by the end of 2007…

\n

I really could not have foreseen such a big success for Daily Blog Tips. The 5,000 mark was reached one week ago already, but I waited a bit to write this post, just to make sure that the feed count would not fluctuate below 5,000 on the day after the celebration \':)\' .

\n

Anyway I just wanted to thank all the readers, and if you are not a subscriber yet make sure to grab the RSS feed or to subscribe via email.

\n

The blog has many upcoming events. In November it will turn one year old, there is a redesign coming and many blog projects, so stay tuned!\n

SEO Advice for Bloggers, Straight from the Horse’s Mouth

At a current WordCamp conference, Matt Cutts, one of Google’s most outspoken authorities, weighed in with some advice for bloggers. Some of what he had to say was real news and some of it just reinforced common SEO wisdom, but it was all very useful information. The video of Matt’s presentation is shown below. If you don’t have an hour to watch the whole thing, I’ve also summarized some of Matt’s more notable points.

\n

\n

\n

RSS subscribers will need to click on the video link to watch.

\n

Juicy Tidbits

\n

Matt had a lot to say. Here are some of his most noteworthy observations.

\n

    \n

  • If you think Google hates your site, get over it. Algorithms don’t hold grudges.
  • \n

  • WordPress is very good for SEO right out of the box.
  • \n

  • The SEO Title Tag Plugin can be very helpful for your rankings.
  • \n

  • If you have a choice about how to structure your URLs, use dashes to indicate word breaks. If you use underscores, though, don’t bother making the switch. Just be sure to use one of the two.
  • \n

  • Put your blog in a sub-directory rather than the root in case you want to do other things with your site later. It might also get people to link to your home page and your blog separately for double the link juice. Just don’t name the directory “wordpress.”
  • \n

  • Be sure that post creation dates are easy to find.
  • \n

  • If you want to get listed in Google News, you need to have multiple authors.
  • \n

  • Full text RSS gets more loyal readers. Partial feeds just get more page views (not sure about this one).
  • \n

  • When considering video vs. podcast, check your rating on hotornot.com. If you got 6 or lower, go with a podcast. \':)\'
  • \n

  • Use a different stylesheet for mobile content.
  • \n

  • Having a lot of slashes in your URL, such as for the date, doesn’t cause problems in Google. It might still cause problems in Yahoo or MSN.
  • \n

  • Communicate with Google through the Webmaster Console. It’s a great way to monitor for any potential ranking problems.
  • \n

  • If you’re popular enough that people might want to hack you, think about making your wp-admin folder only accessible via a white list.
  • \n

\n

Common SEO Advice

\n

Matt also provided a number of good tips that are just common sense when it comes to SEO. For those of you who might be new to SEO, here are the important ones.

\n

    \n

  • When writing titles and copy, use words that people might type to search for your post. Don’t forget synonyms and plural versions of those words. Put the same consideration into category names.
  • \n

  • File extensions make no difference when it comes to search engine rankings. Just make sure to never use .exe.
  • \n

  • Search engine spiders and visually-impaired users have one thing in common: They both like alt text on images and other media.
  • \n

  • When you’re moving your domain, use a 301 redirect to preserve your rankings.
  • \n

  • Don’t put too much work into meta tags. Google doesn’t pay very much attention to them.
  • \n

  • If you want to be ranked, make sure your site can be crawled.
  • \n

  • Decide whether or not to use www in your URLs and be consistent about it. The yes-www plugin is great for this. Also be sure to set your preference in the Google Webmaster Console.
  • \n

  • Query strings are treated the same as static URLs. Just be sure to limit the number of parameters to two or three.
  • \n

  • Supplemental pages need links to get out of the supplemental index.
  • \n

\n

The real take-home lesson from Matt’s presentation, and one that’s echoed time and again by SEO professionals and successful bloggers alike, is to focus on content first and rankings second. If you have one, you will get the other. More importantly, it doesn’t pay to try and game Google’s algorithm.\n

Two Free Logos for DBT Readers

\"logodesignworks.gif\"

\n

Having a very special look is very important for any blog. It will improve your branding and make the readers remember you more easily. The first step towards this one-of-a-kind look is the logo.

\n

Logo Design Works is a company specialized in logo design, and recently they started an interesting promotional effort offering 10 free logos monthly (worth $197 each one) for popular blogs around the Internet.

\n

In order to apply for the free logo you need to meet certain criteria (e.g., the blog must be in English, older than 6 months and so on). If you meet the requirements you will then fill out a questionnaire and they will choose the best candidates.

\n

I guess that they must be loaded with applications, so it might be tough to get selected. Fortunately I managed to talk with the person that is doing the online marketing for the company, and he concurred to offer two free logos for the DBT readers. Superior yet, the only requirement for these two blogs is that they must be centered around specific topics. The topics are:

\n

    \n

  • design
  • \n

  • small business
  • \n

  • marketing
  • \n

  • SEO
  • \n

  • blogging
  • \n

  • freelance
  • \n

  • productivity
  • \n

\n

If you want the free logo just post a comment on this post. I will choose randomly two people tomorrow, and the winners will be announced as an update on this same post. All comments carrying a timestamp of September 3rd will be considered.

\n

UPDATE: We have the winners. Congratulations to Engtech and Kyle. I used this random number picker to draw the numbers.

Internet Marketing – 7 Internet Marketing Mistakes Which Are Destroying Your Business

7 World wide web Marketing Mistakes Which Are Destroying Your Business

By Terry Dean

Below are 7 Mistakes which you can constantly see many Internet businesses making over and over again. Each of these mistakes can easily cost your business thousands or tens of thousands of dollars yearly.

As a matter of fact, I see many internet businesses out there that have next to no chance of success because a couple of these problems are at the very heart of their business.

If your business is built on a weak foundation, there is no way it will be able to produce maximum income for you even if it does somehow survive.

Mistake #1: You have a short-sighted vision.

Do you have a long term plan for your business or are you just trying to make it through the month?

I know marketers who have a 1 year plan, 5 year plan, 10 year plan, and even a 50 year plan for their business…What does your plan consist of?

A lot of people are making fun of Amazon.com because of the fact that they lose an average of $3.00 per book that they sell. Do you realize though what their long term plan is?

Each single day they are using their massive financial backing to take up more and more of the book market share. They are quickly becoming the most well known bookstore on the earth…and every other bookstore is beginning to feel the pressure from them.

I am definitely not suggesting to you that you need to begin losing money to gain customers, because most of us small businesses just could not afford that tactic. What I am suggesting to you is what you learn the lifetime value of a customer.

It is 7 – 10 easier to sell a product to an existing customer than it is to sell to a new customer. How are you building the relationships with your current customers? Are you seeking out and finding new products that meet other needs and wants they might have? Are you treating your current customers as your most valuable asset in your business?

Mistake #2: You aren\’t willing to think outside the box.

For many world wide web marketers, they only see two types of advertising. Number 1 for them is free advertising such as free links, free classifieds, newsgroup participation, and more. Secondly, they see paid advertising such as banner ads, offline advertising, and paid links.

What about finding people in your business to endorse your products or services to their customers and splitting the profits? Jay Abraham and Mike Enlow both list this as the most powerful marketing tool in existence…do you even know about it?

Press releases can get traffic to your site nearly overnight if you have something that people want or need…have you worked with the media to get some Free traffic?

Have you considered setting up your own affiliate program? This is the quickest and easiest way to expand the sales of any successful product or business. Let other people start selling it for you!

Mistake #3: You have fallen in love with the wrong product.

Have you fallen in love with the wrong product? It is interesting to note that in the Direct Mail Bootcamp, where a Dozen Top Marketers gathered together to discuss the recipe for marketing success, one of the main reasons for failure that they all concurred upon was…falling in love with your product or service.

I comprehend that your product might be your baby, but you will have to be willing to give it up if it is not what the market wants. Each day the world market is changing and you have to be changing right alongside it. It may be that demand for your product is declining…if so, are you willing to give it up and find a product people want?

Begin asking some questions of your web site visitors or ezine readers. Ask them what it is that they want. What is it that they are looking for? You may find out that you have been barking up the wrong tree and trying to sell them something that they do not really want (Even if it is what they need).

You will go broke trying to sell people what they need…if it isn\’t what they want! The actual statistics are that only one out of every seven products turns out to be a winner. Go with the odds and be willing to change if your market WANTS something different.

Mistake #4: You don\’t have a Unique Web Position.

What makes your site different than everyone else\’s? Why should they visit you instead of somewhere else? Why should they buy from you instead of the competition?

If you cannot answer those questions in one swift sentence, then you do not have the type of UWP you need to succeed in today\’s worldwide business environment

Spend some time and visit the competition. What is it that you do superior than them? What is it that you offer different from them? For example, in the internet marketing sites out there, so many of them are only me-too sites. What are you going to do to make yourself different than the rest? Is it better prices, better services, free stuff, quicker results, etc.?

Mistake #5: You have not researched your market enough.

Do you know what it is that your market wants? Have you ever taken the time to go back to your customers and ask them why they bought from you in the first place? Have you spent time in discussion groups, mailing lists, and newsgroups to find out what problems people might be having or what they are looking for?

If you don\’t know why people buy from you, how can you target them correctly or write a sales letter that will hit their hot buttons? I will give you the answer to that one…you cannot do it.

Concept is more important than ad copy. Coming up with exactly the right concept (or angle) for your product will make OK ad copy sell like crazy. A poor concept could never be made profitable even by the best copywriters out there.

Mistake #6: You aren\’t dealing with people as individuals.

Don\’t speak to everyone…deal with individuals. I believe in automating as much of the sales process as possible, but there still comes the time that you have to deal with people like people. We run the numbers on our sales statistics, but people are not just numbers.

Always remember the human element. Those aren\’t just email addresses out there. They are real live individuals who have wants, needs, and desires just like you. Deal with them that way.

Be willing to help…Be willing to give away free information…Give away free samples…Be someone that people like.

Mistake #7: You give up too soon.

This almost goes without saying, but many individuals give up too soon. I have seen hundreds of individuals make some of the mistakes above on their sites, lose a tiny money, and then give up in disgust believing that the internet just doesn\’t work.

I am not just dealing with your entire business either. Sometimes people give up on advertising too soon. They don\’t test it enough. Instead of believing that a certain web site is not a good place to advertise or that a certain ezine doesn\’t bring in responses for you, did you try editing your ad first. I have seen ads double, triple, or even have as high as 10 times or more effectiveness on the same sites just by a couple of changes.

What do you do now that you know these 7 deadly internet sins?

Read through them…Take them to heart…Make changes in your business if needed. Don\’t just walk away from this and say, \”That was a pretty good article.\” Use it and let these tips help you in your business.

Then, email me about it. I want to know if this article helps you or if there is anything else I can do for you. Send an email to Terry@bizpromo.com anytime.

Internet Marketing – Pitfalls to Avoid as a Newbie in Internet Marketing – Managing Yourself: Email

Previously I wrote about the need to establish a budget (time and money), and then about the pressure of information overload when starting out in World wide web Marketing. This day I will look at the problem of having your life in chaos trying to keep track of all that you are trying to accomplish.

I would like to share with you a number of the techniques I used to help cope with the need to keep a momentum going and also the need to learn and absorb as much of the data that is coming down the pipe to you. I will break these down into separate articles as they apply to different aspects of your business.

The short story is that to be able to cope and not feel as if you are continually playing catch-up, is to be ORGANIZED. Yep, simple, is not it – NOT! Most of the time, as we go along on our way, there is \’stuff\’ that we leave to do later – this accumulates and by the end of the week there is a big pile of emails that still need replying to, articles that still need to be written or posted, the blog is out of date…..yadda, yadda, yadda. When it gets to this point, we feel as though we are overwhelmed and start to be less productive.

Here is the Silver Bullet! (I bet you thought that there were no Silver Bullets left)

STOP EVERYTHING! Yes, stop doing everything and MAKE yourself give over about 4 hours where you will not look at emails, web pages, answer phones etc. These 4 hours will be used to take a good look at how you are doing things and make a plan to get everything on track.

It is not a big deal – quite simple to start in fact. Go to the basic actions you do every day.

* EMAILS – this is probably one of the major time wasters and causes of getting behind – if you do not manage the system right. Firstly, make a rule that you will only read and act on (or download) emails 3 times a day – you figure the times, but restrict yourself to 15 minutes, three times a day. (Don\’t panic – you will be amazed at how much you will get through in a concentrated 15 minutes, besides you will be doing it 3 times – a whole 45 minutes of email time per day!!)

(Hopefully by now you will have set up your desktop email program to retrieve the emails from your various POP3 mailboxes and deposit them locally – big time saver – one click and all the mail comes whooshing in!!!)

Next, take some time to setup your email program so that it is semi-automated. The idea here is to create rules for incoming mails so that they do not all get into your primary inbox and cause a big mess that takes hours to sort through.

An simple way to do this is to identify the emails that you can group – from a specific sender, or a specific topic – whatever. Then set up a rule (check out your email program) that picks up the emails as soon as they come into your inbox and then moves them to the folder you have set up. Also, setup a rule that will delete emails that you would not normally bother with – this takes a bit of time to figure out, but maybe initially just move them into a PENDING folder and then scan it briefly and do a manual mass delete when satisfied there is nothing of importance.

What you are doing here is YOU are deciding what to read when. This way you are able to pop in at your intervals and browse a folder without getting bogged down in \’chaff\’. You are already on the way to grabbing back control.

Over the next few articles I will be tackling all of the various time-wasting activities that cause us to slow-down. Please drop a line to my email if there is something specific you feel could be written about.

If I can leave you with one thought for today: Tidy up your mind as well as your workspace. If everything is where you want it without having to scratch around, you will save minutes that add up to hours each week.

Internet Marketing – Set Up Your Mind for Success in Internet Marketing

The Secret is Finally Revealed

If you reed and apply the following information, you are on the way to change dramatically your Internet Marketing results and your life. You will find here the secret kept away from the general public for centuries.

Politicians, popes, leading scientists, kings and army leaders have been using the secret to achieve all there miraculous success trough their lifetime.

Now, the secret is available for you. It is hard to believe it and accept it, but that makes it so important. It is simple like a child play. Just keep on reading.

The first part of the secret is: You attract and create everything which is happening in your life. It is called The Law of Attraction.

It is difficult to accept that someone can bring himself a cancer or horrible accident, but it is a scientifically fact, proved by the quantum physics.

The power of our thoughts is enormous and goes far beyond the limits of the body. Our thoughts are like a very strong magnet attracting everything which is in synch. So we think about bad stuff like being in debt or broken relationship and more of the same is coming to us.

I know it is nearly impossible to generate a positive thought when you are surrounded by bad circumstances. But this is where the game starts. You have to comprehend that those bad circumstances, surrounding you right now have been created by you. Your negative thoughts attracted and continue to attract that bad stuff.

It is like a vicious circle or more correct a spiral going down and down. How to stop that? Reverse your thoughts. Here comes the most difficult part: Can you control your thoughts? The fact is that no one can do that, unless in possession of a super power.

How an ordinary human being can achieve that control? The answer is by watching emotions. It turns out that emotions are even easier to control and they can affect our thoughts.

Each time you catch yourself in a bad mood or negative emotion – switch to a positive one. This is the clue. You have to create a habit of switching from negative to positive emotions. Create a vision, recall an event from your life, where you have been extremely happy and call this moment each time you find your self in a bad mood or emotion.

How easy is that. Every one can do it. It takes a part of a second to make it happened.

Let\’s reveal the tree practical steps about creating your life: Step one: Before to start any World wide web Marketing session see your self as a winner. Create a vision within you. Write on a piece of paper what you want. Draw a picture, make a pic and put it on the wall in the spot you can see it easily.

Step Two: Bring it. This is not your part. It is obligation of the universe to bring to you whatever you ask for. You have no power to know how is this going to happen.

Step Three: Receive it. You have to prepare yourself for receiving what you asked for. Here comes your obligation to keep the positive emotions and thoughts in synch of what you are asking for – a profitable Internet Marketing trades.

Deep inside of you has to be absolute faith that the thing you asked for is on its way to you. You have to begin seeing it materialized and act as it is already here.

And the most important part of the game: As it is already here you have to be grateful to the Universe, Creator, God or whatever you call it, which is bringing your desire to you. This is the most powerful part to understand and apply.

If you send a thank you message to the Universe for something which is not yet materialized, then the Universe has no choice but to deliver it to you as soon as possible.

And the last part of your preparation is: Give whatever you want to be given. If you want money – begin giving away money. If you need help – start helping others.

The secret is now revealed to you. It is so easy and powerful and has been in use for ages. It is difficult to believe in it and that is what is going to separate the winners from the losers in this life.

It works for World wide web Marketing and everything else in your life. Try it and enjoy the outcome. Your life will never be the same.

Internet Marketing – How to get an Internet Marketing Education Without Spending a Nickel

Do you want to create a passive income? Are you bewildered by all the educational Marketing products out there? Are you on a low budget or trying to escape from a massive debt load?

Well, I answered a large \”Yes!\” to all the above, especially, the last one

My job sucks. I can barely make ends meet and I have some medical problems which make a \”normal\” working lifestyle very difficult.

That\’s why I become an Affiliate. I refer people to a merchant\’s site and make a decent commission. I run ads on Google linked to the product.

It is a really easy way to make money but there is a learning curve involved. Without a solid understanding of World wide web marketing, pay-per-clicks and affiliate programs you could waste a lot of money. I did. At first. But, then I discovered a way to get a free education. You can do it, too.

Five Easy Steps to Valuable free Information

1. Search the net for marketing products in the areas you are interested in ie: Affiliate programs, Search Engine optimization, Keywords, website building etc.

2.Find the sign-up for their free newsletter or ezine. All the Marketing Pros have them (but you might have to allow popups on some sites)

3. Sign up for the ezine or join the affiliate programs.

4. Repeat the process.

5. Check your inbox.

Now, you might be thinking: \”Hold on a sec, there Dave! Aren\’t these guys just going to pitch the hell out of me for stuff I cannot afford? What is in it for me?\” All the Web Gurus have to face these questions everyday.

How do they stop people from unsubscribing? How do they keep them coming back?

Lots and lots of free stuff! They reward their readership on a regular basis because they know \”Buy! Purchase! Purchase!\” is not going to… sell.

I receive about 40 newsletters from the Uber Affiliates and the like. It\’s astonishing the amount of free info I have acquired. They give away reports and ebooks. They give away How-to\’s and tutorials. They give you free e-courses and informative interviews.

It\’s a great headstart on your new marketing career but they do not reveal everything. That\’s when you can judiciously spend your hard-earned dollars on some of their products. It has saved me thousands!

So, if you are a running on a shoe string, have the time to read and assimilate tons of good info, and are willing to separate the wheat from the chaff… this method is for you.

Oh, and you have to like get something for nothing. That is key. 😉

There is gold in them thar emails!

Why would anyone buy information or an ebook on the web when they can find it for free?

It takes time to search and acquire all this free information and, as they say: time is money.

If you find a product that will immediately provide you with the solutions you need (and you can afford it) I suggest you think about buying the information. I buy as many marketing ebooks as my budget grants.
