This post is by Mohsin of blogging Bits.

\n

Want to take your copywriting to the next level?

\n

Avoid clichés like the plague.

\n

OK, so there’s a cliché in the headline, the opening and the picture of this post, and we’re all in on the joke. But outside of irony, are clichés something you want in your writing?

\n

Clichés are the words and phrases that come to your mind when you write your first draft. They are the language you hear and use when gossiping with your pals. Put simply, in writing, clichés are bland and overused phrases that fail to excite, motivate, and impress your readers or prospective buyers.

\n

Two years back, when I read great copy, or compelling writing in general, I was sucked into it and couldn’t pop my head out until I reached the last full-stop. I wondered what was in such a writing that made it so irresistible.

\n

I kept wondering until I became a blogger, and saw writing from a writer’s standpoint. I discovered that it was the clever use of words that hypnotized me. It was the art of presenting routine stories in such ways that left a deep imprint on my mind.
\nAnd, yes, it was writing that engaged my attention by avoiding clichés.

\n

Clichés are boring

\n

What makes clichés so boring? The fact that clichés are so generic you can attach them to any idea makes them ineffective.
\nGiven that clichés are the phrases that have struck our eardrums uncountable times, we either don’t associate them with particular ideas and products, or we associate many products and ideas with a particular cliché.

\n

Maybe a cliché was a one-of-a-kind expression when you first came across it, but since then, you have heard it repeated so many times, it has lost all the original shine.

\n

Remember what radio show hosts say when they announce a commercial break? They usually go like “Stay tuned. We’ll be back after a short break“. The problem with the cliché “stay tuned” is obvious. It makes us yawn.

\n

Whenever I hear a host announce the break, I tune into another station. But on this Sunday, when I was listening to a music show at a local FM station, and as usual the break time came, the host of the show emphatically said “Don’t tune into another channel while we bother you with a few commercials, there are some very special songs on the other side of the break“.
\nThe host didn’t use the ineffective cliché, and he got my attention with his very special presentation of a boring announcement.

\n

Well, I did stay tuned.

\n

Going cliché hunting!

\n

Now, if you begin writing with strong phrases, you are going to run into a problem. You might overdo it, and your writing might begin looking artificial.

\n

A very straightforward solution to this is to let the clichés come.

\n

As I noted in above lines, clichés are the very first thoughts that occur to you about an idea, and they help you swiftly figure out what’s on your mind. It makes sense to get the general ideas out of your head before coming down hard on unworthy expressions.

\n

But when you are done writing, equip yourself with the right armory, and snipe at them clichés one by one!
\nReplace clichés with more energetic, invigorating, and exciting phrases. Phrases that give your copy a one-of-a-kind aura and hypnotize your readers.

\n

Here are some examples of clichés and their alternatives.

\n

    \n
  • Cliché: It was an emotional scene.
  • \n

  • Original: It was a scene so sad that I had to look away. (long but not trite)
  • \n

\n

    \n
  • Cliché: Our product sold like hotcakes.
  • \n

  • Original: We sold out the whole stock in just a week.
  • \n

\n

    \n
  • Cliché: Lost hope? Don’t give up on life yet!
  • \n

  • Original: Ran out of reasons to live? We’ll give you one!
  • \n

\n

See… it is simple as pie (whatever that means).

\n

What about you? Do you tolerate clichés in your writing?

Several blogs have created top lists in the past with the most popular blogs on the World wide web according to the number of rss subscribers. It was a interesting idea, but I knew that sooner or later someone would create a special website to automate the process and present the rankings in a more clear fashion.

\n

Well, it just happened. Rating Burner ranks the top 400 blogs on the web according to their number of RSS subscribers (as reported by feedburner). It also tracks Google Pagerank, variations on the RSS count, the latest post of the blog and whether it has ads and sponsors or not. Pretty cool eh? (Well, except for the little faces that they used to report the Pagerank…)

\n

\n

The list is not as complete as it could be right now, but I am sure that the owners will update it regularly. Daily Blog Tips appears on the 47th position.

I must admit that I tend to forget some of these myself, so hopefully this post will also serve as a checklist to go through once in a while. What about you, do you forget them?

\n

1. Proofread. If you browse around the blogosphere you will notice that the vast majority of the bloggers do not proofread. Confusions with its and it’s, your and you’re, and their and they’re are very common. So the next time you finish writing a post or article, remember to proofread it. If it is a guest article or a linkbait piece, proofread it one more time. Check out the article 8 Proofreading Tips And Techniques for tips on this topic.

\n

2. Backup. Over the past year I had around five friends coming to me on MSN and asking: “Hey Daniel, my blog crashed, and I had no backups, any tips on how to solve it?” Trust me, you really don’t want to find yourself in that position. Backup regularly if you do it manually. The best option, however, would be to get a script or your hosting provider to do automatic daily backups. Read Backup Your Blog Regularly to find more instructions on how to backup a WordPress blog.

\n

3. Link to older posts. Linking to older posts can increase your traffic and search engine rankings. Additionally, it can also give more information for the readers that want to go deeper into certain subjects. If you have been blogging for months already you probably have a vast and rich archive, so use it. Read more about this on 10 Easy Ways to Improve Internal Linking on Your Blog.

\n

4. Answer to comments. When you started blogging I am pretty sure that you got excited with the first few comments that arrived. You would even take the time to answer to each of them individually. That approach helps to create loyal readers and to build a community around them. Even if your blog is much more popular now, do not neglect the comments. At the very minimum you want to answer the people that post direct questions to you.

\n

5. Answer to emails. Depending on the size of your audience it might become cumbersome to answer to all emails, but you should try nonetheless. Create a standard letter to common questions that you get asked. Answer to them in batches. Do whatever it takes, but try to be responsive to people that want to interact with you. It might be the difference between an upset visitor and a faithful reader. If you have a hard time dealing with your email, check these 10 tips to manage it more efficiently.

\n

6. Approve comments. If you use comment moderation (and you should unless you get very low volumes of spam) you should approve pending comments on a regular basis. There is nothing worse than taking the time to leave a meaningful comment on a blog and not being able to see it published within a couple of hours. Not to mention when your comment doesn’t get published at all.

\n

7. Check the spam folder. This point is valid both for your blog comments and for your emails. Some legitimate comments and emails might slip to the spam folder. This is not your fault, but it is not fault of the sender either, so check these folders once in a while to make sure people are not getting ignored.

\n

8. Upgrade WordPress. Common sense, yet many bloggers are reluctant to upgrade their WordPress software. Some people deliberately choose to use older versions. That could be possible if you know what you are doing (i.e. if you know to patch the security holes). If that is not your case, though, just stick with the latest version. Here is a guide to update WordPress.

\n

9. Update WordPress plugins. Not all plugins are compatible with all WordPress versions. Some require special functions or features that are found only on a particular version, and they might end up messing up your blog. Some of them also come with bugs and security problems, which get fixed by the author on consecutive versions.

\n

10. Network. Ask ten bloggers what is the secret of their success, and I am sure that at least half of them will mention their network of contacts and friends. Sometimes who you know is more important than what you know. Keep that in mind and try to network with people as often as possible. As a blogger you have numerous way to do it.

\n

Is there anything else that we tend to forget but shouldn’t?\n

A few days ago I was reading through the items that were currently listed on the front page of the technology section, and was observing the rich getting richer and smaller bloggers having a difficult time cracking the upper echelon of Digg success.
  • \n

  • 11 Essential Tips to Writing the Ultimate Tutorial: Tutorials are a great source of traffic that is maintained over time. Regular blog posts bring in the majority of their visitors during the first couple days of their existence. Afterwards they might as well be deleted from your blog because they will most likely rot in the archives, never to be read again. Tutorials on the other hand, provide consistent traffic that will bring in more traffic over its life time than many of your other posts. It is not a stretch to say that a good tutorial can bring in as much traffic (or more) compared to 20 well written posts.
  • \n

  • Separate Trackbacks from Comments on Your WordPress Blog: I wonder why WordPress theme designers don’t implement this feature more often. Separating trackbacks from comments is a very simple tweak that will greatly improve the user experience for the people that comment or read comments on your blog. If you keep them together (as I used to until recently…) the readers will see a bunch of links and snippets of code blended with the real comments, making it difficult to follow the conversation.
  • \n

  • Poll: Will Most Blogs Migrate to Excerpts on the Homepage?: Full posts on the homepage enables the readers to go through the most recent articles without needing to click further. Excerpts, on the other hand, makes it possible to scan through a more massive number of posts, so that the reader can read only what he is really interested in.

\"Headlines\"

\n

The post is by Sean D’Souza

\n

Writing headlines for articles is like witchcraft. You have to know the spells, and chant before you can create awesome headlines, right?

\n

Nah!

\n

What you really need is a factor of new.

\n

And also a bit of knew.

\n

So what do I mean by new and knew?

\n

New is kinda obvious. If you have something new in the headline, then the reader is instantly interested.

\n

The curiosity trigger is launched, and the reader wants to know what’s next. But if your entire headline had a factor of new you’ll cause anxiety, not curiosity.

\n

So let’s look at a few examples to see what I mean. Let’s go back into the last century to the year 1999.

\n

And being that it’s 1999, you’ve heard nothing about the iPod. Or podcasts. Or rss.

\n

And your headline read: How to Create rss Podcasts with the iPod.

\n

Aha, it’s all new information if you’re still stuck in 1999, right?

\n

So why did it cause your brain to go waka-waka?

\n

Because it’s all so new. And running into all new is like running into an InDesign Toolbar with five-hundred palettes.

\n

Or a strange city where you don’t quite know your way round.

\n

Notice what I just did?

\n

I put two scenarios in front of you:

\n

    \n
  1. InDesign Tool Bar with five-hundred palettes.
  2. \n

  3. A strange city where you don’t know your way around.
  4. \n

\n

And if you’re familiar with InDesign, you’ll have coasted through both analogies in a few seconds. But even if you didn’t know what the heck InDesign or palettes are, the second example of the strange city would be something you could quite easily relate to.

\n

The concept of the strange city is the factor of knew, which is something your know.

\n

While the new is something that’s kinda still unknown.

\n

So how do we use this magic spell for article headlines?

\n

We mix the new and the knew. Throw in a bat wing or two. And some shitake mushrooms. Et Voila, we have a bunch of headlines that looketh like this:

\n

    \n
  1. Why the ‘Yes-Yes’ Factor Helps You Raise Prices.
  2. \n

  3. Is There Too Much Sugar In Your Testimonials?
  4. \n

  5. The Critical Importance of Sandwiching Your Articles.
  6. \n

  7. How Segues Reduce Friction in Sales.
  8. \n

  9. Why Consumption is More Important Than Attraction and Conversion.
  10. \n

\n

You noticed, didn’t you?

\n

There are new elements in the copy. And there are knew elements.

\n

Some things you recognized right away, while others arouse your curiosity. The factor of new attracts you, but equally important, the knew signals what topic is being covered.

\n

So you can clearly see what those five topics are about:

\n

    \n
  1. Raising prices.
  2. \n

  3. Testimonials.
  4. \n

  5. Something to do with article writing.
  6. \n

  7. Reducing friction in sales.
  8. \n

  9. Something that’s more important than attraction and conversion.
  10. \n

\n

When the ‘new’ and the ‘knew’ mix, they create dynamite:

\n

    \n
  • Too much ‘new’ and the headline is intimidating as hell.
  • \n

  • Too much ‘knew’ is a yawn, and a siesta comes to mind.
  • \n

\n

But mixed together just right, you’ve got yourself a great headline.

\n

Do you need to write every headline with ‘new’ and ‘knew?’

\n

And the answer is no. This isn’t a formula for every article headline you write. There are other ways to get curiosity.

\n

A smarter way to write article headlines is to mix and match:

\n

    \n
  • Headlines with a ‘How To’ factor do really well.
  • \n

  • Headlines with questions do really well.
  • \n

  • Headlines with new and knew, however, have a special magic, and cast a spell.
  • \n

\n

But use the spell sparingly, ok!
